Overview

The Hammerhead (*Panoplia hammerhead*) is a large aggressive territorial herbivore found at shallow depths of 0–50m in Subnautica 2. With 1,000 HP and dual attack types — a 15-damage ram and a 15-damage bite — this armored herd creature is one of the most common threats in early exploration zones.

Behavior & Details

The Hammerhead's signature attack is its jet-propelled ram. Spiracles behind the eyes feed into a jet channel with internal gills, powering sudden charges that close distance with startling speed. Before ramming, the Hammerhead displays a clear warning sequence: it fans its pectoral fins outward and closes its enamel head shield. Recognizing this display gives you a critical reaction window to dodge or retreat.

Despite being classified as aggressive, the Hammerhead is a grazer — its muscular vertical jaw is built for sponges, kelps, tunicates, and crushed coral. Its territoriality evolved from the need to protect feeding areas, not from predatory instinct. Hammerheads establish ramming grounds called leks, which generate intense ocean noise that serves as both a territorial signal and a useful auditory warning for divers.

Tips & Strategy

Watch for the pectoral fin display and head shield closing — this is the Hammerhead's pre-ram warning. You have roughly 2–3 seconds to change direction before the jet-propelled charge connects.

Hammerhead leks (ramming grounds) produce loud, distinctive ocean noise. If you hear intense rhythmic impacts at 0–50m depth, you are near a territorial zone — navigate around it rather than through it.

At 1,800-unit sight range, Hammerheads detect you at moderate distance. Approach herds slowly from the periphery and scan isolated individuals at the edge rather than entering the center of the group.

Vehicle pilots take extra caution: the 15-damage ram can hit vehicles hard, and Hammerheads specifically target intruders in their grazing territory. Throttle down when passing through shallow Hammerhead zones.

The Hammerhead is the armored, shield-bearing ancestor of the Epicurean. Unlike its deep-water relative, the Hammerhead relies on head armor and territory rather than jaw size — never assume its herbivore diet means it is passive.

PDA Entry

PDA // Databank
Hammerhead (tentatively *Panoplia hammerhead*). An armored, herd-dwelling, territorial herbivore with a powerful ram. 1. Hammer head Challenges intruders on its territory, especially other hammerheads. Displays its pectoral fins and closes its enamel head shield before attacking. 2. Jet propulsion Spiracles behind the eyes feed into a jet channel with internal gills. The jet drives the hammerhead's sudden rams. 3. Large brain Floats in a protective cyst. The central eye sees color, while two smaller motion-sensitive eyes guide ramming. 4. Grazing jaw The muscular vertical jaw suggests a diet of sponges, kelps, tunicates, and possibly crushed coral. The need to protect a grazing area may have evolved the hammerhead's territoriality. 5. Practice behavior? Hammerheads ram coral domes. The adaptive benefit is unclear—perhaps toughening their shields. Advise caution, especially when piloting vehicles. May have social cognition comparable to Earth’s ungulates, some of which were extremely dangerous to humans. Ramming areas (called leks) are a major source of ocean noise.
