Nibblers are scrape-feeders with enormous calcium apatite jaw crests (the rhinotheca and gnathoteca) that crush rocks, dead coral, sponges, kelp, and anything else within reach. New teeth continuously push through the cores of old ones, splitting them open in a replacement cycle that maintains razor-sharp edges at all times. These jaw structures are not designed for predation — they evolved for breaking down hard debris — but they snap at anything that enters territorial range, including human limbs and vehicle components.

Despite not being apex predators, Nibblers compensate with territorial aggression and constant hunger. Maintaining their massive jaw musculature and digestive tract on a diet of slime, algae, and organic debris means they are perpetually seeking additional food sources. Their internal gizzard grinds food into a concrete-like paste, causing frequent constipation — a biological detail that explains their irritable disposition.

Tips & Strategy

At 100 HP and 5 damage per bite, individual Nibblers are manageable — but they travel in groups. When one attacks, expect 2–3 more to converge within seconds. Avoid lingering in their territory.

Nibblers are startled by bright light and loud sound. Deploy a Distraction Flare when farming resources in their territory — it buys 10–15 seconds of safe harvesting time.

Their jaw crests snap at anything in range, including vehicle components. Keep your Tadpole moving when passing through Nibbler-dense areas to avoid accumulating hull damage from opportunistic bites.

Nibblers cluster around hard debris and coral formations where they scrape-feed. Mineral deposits in these same areas mean you will inevitably encounter them while resource farming in the Coral Gardens.

As territorial omnivores, Nibblers do not chase far beyond their home range. If swarmed, swim 30–40 meters in any direction — they typically disengage once you leave their claimed zone.
